Elizabeth Borowsky, NCTM, enjoys a multifaceted career as pianist, composer, and educator. Her project, Inner Harmony, created with mindfulness teacher Jesika Harmon and inspired by her breast cancer journey, blends piano and meditation to promote healing and mindfulness.
“When a routine biopsy revealed an aggressive form of breast cancer, I suddenly found myself in a reality I never imagined. Alongside the shock and uncertainty came the emotional weight of survival statistics — and the realization that I needed more than medical intervention. I needed support.”
Together, we created something that helped calm my nervous system, transform fear, and make space for resilience. The music and meditations developed side by side, shaped in real time by the realities of diagnosis, treatment, and healing. Rather than pairing finished music with scripted meditation, we allowed both to emerge together — responding to the moment, to the body, and to the emotional landscape as it shifted.
From this process, we developed what we now call Sonisah Meditation — a form of healing expression that blends music composed from lived experience with mindfulness practices shaped in real time. It is not background music, and it is not meditation with accompaniment. The music listens, responds, and supports — becoming an active participant in the experience.
Each track on the album reflects a different part of my journey: the shock of diagnosis, the loss of my hair during chemotherapy, the fear of the unknown, and the gradual return to trust and presence. The piano became more than an instrument — it became a companion, helping me move through what could not be rushed or avoided.
As a pianist and composer, my lifelong goal has been to move and lift the hearts of listeners. Creating the music for Inner Harmony allowed me to bring that same intention into the meditations themselves — to support the words, deepen their emotional impact, and offer listeners an added layer of comfort and strength during moments of challenge.
