The University of Rwanda Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is a postgraduate specialist training program designed to build national and regional capacity in comprehensive cancer care through advanced clinical training, education, and mentorship. The program is hosted by the University of Rwanda, with fellows embedded in Rwanda’s main cancer treatment centers where they receive hands-on clinical exposure, participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, engage in research activities, and progressively assume independent clinical responsibilities under supervision.
A core strength of the fellowship is its strategic collaboration with ONCares, which serves as an academic and training partner. ONCares faculty are directly involved in the education of fellows, delivering structured teaching through lectures, case-based discussions, mentorship, and curriculum support. Importantly, ONCares faculty also conduct in-person teaching visits to Rwanda, during which they provide intensive on-site instruction, bedside teaching, and academic engagement tailored to the local oncology context.
In addition to in-country training, the fellowship incorporates external rotations as a key component of professional development. Through ONCares, fellows undertake short-term rotations at institutions affiliated with ONCares faculty and board members, gaining exposure to high-volume oncology services, advanced diagnostics and therapeutics, multidisciplinary care models, and research environments. This bidirectional model—ONCares faculty teaching in Rwanda and fellows training at ONCares-linked institutions abroad—ensures the fellowship delivers rigorous, globally informed oncology training while remaining firmly grounded in Rwanda’s health system needs.
