Neurosurgery Resident, University of Rwanda
I am a neurosurgery resident at the University of Rwanda, committed to transforming the healthcare landscape of my home country, Burundi. With a clinical foundation from Nanjing Medical School in China, I am specializing in neurosurgery to tackle one of the most pressing yet overlooked crises in East Africa: the lack of specialized neurological emergency care.
Burundi currently exists within a “trauma desert,” where the absence of a dedicated neurosurgical center creates a significant public health gap. For many Burundians, a traumatic brain or spinal injury is often a terminal diagnosis. I am dedicated to establishing Burundi’s first Neurosurgical Trauma Center. This center is envisioned as more than just a facility; it represents a blueprint for a resilient healthcare system. My goals include providing life-saving interventions and 24/7 specialized surgical care to reduce preventable deaths from road traffic accidents and falls. The center will implement international standards of care in a low-resource setting through innovative research and data-driven protocols, serving as a training hub to develop a sustainable workforce of Burundian specialists, ensuring that the country can provide complex care without relying solely on external aid.
As a multilingual leader fluent in English, French, Kirundi, and Kinyarwanda, I aim to bridge the gap between global medical innovation and local community needs. My discipline, drives my determination to create a future where every Burundian has access to the care they deserve.
